Counterstrain utilizes diagnostic tender points to identify painful, contracted and reflexively protected tissues. These tissue contractions occur in the body’s deep fascia layers and smooth muscle structures in response to mechanical or chemical trauma. Once present, this form of dysfunction can contribute to a multitude of symptoms including chronic pain. Counterstrain engages passive positioning and tissue gliding to eliminate this dysfunction.
